In another first, this garment is 97% cotton and 3% elastane which is a synthetic fibre known for its exceptional elasticity. It is a polyether-polyurea copolymer that was invented in 1958 by chemist Joseph Shivers at DuPont’s Benger Laboratory in Waynesboro, Virginia – otherwise known as lycra or spandex. Apparently spandex is an anagram of ‘expands’. Will wonders ever cease?
